- Main article: Tractors
Tractors are farming vehicles that began as steam powered engines to run a stationary farm machine. They eventually evolved to traction engines used to plow. The first tractors were simple machines, used either to power stationary farm implements, such as a thresher, but eventually grew into the workhorses seen today. Tractors grew in size and power. The three-point hitch was invented, which allowed impliments to be attached to the tractor directly. Next was the development of the PTO, or the power take-off, which alowed implements towed by the tractor to be powered by the tractor instead of a drive wheel.
The progression into the modern era led to additional developments in size and horsepower. Front wheel assist tractors are able to better use traction to pull tillage equipment through the field. 4-wheel drive tractors were also developed to allow more power to the tractor. These tractors typically articulate because they cannot turn with driven front wheels.
The progression of tractors in the modern era is reflected in Farming Simulator. The first tractors are simple, 2-wheel drive models that are able to complete the task. As the player works up in technology and funds, more diverse and powerful tractors become available. Tractors are essential, as they are the workhorse of the modern farm.

Tip: Even if the Bührer 6135 A doesn't look like much, its able to take on the harder tasks. It also has the best HP/price ratio in the base game. The Schlüter 1500 TVL is a inexpensive choice from the Farming Classics DLC pack. The beginning player will be able to use these models until his funds allow other options.
If your tractor drives slowly or has trouble steering when pulling something big, consider putting a front weight on it. Otherwise, more horsepower may be required.
** Tractors were measured on flat ground with a front 1,500 kg weight for those tractors accepting the 3-point front mount, and the Classic Car Front Weight mod for classic tractors accepting the flat mount, pulling 61,000 litres of wheat in a Kröger Agroliner SRB3-35 trailer using a SIGA Uno adapter. Measurements were taken in miles/hr and converted to km/hr.
* This tractor doesn't accept any additional front weight, but might have a fixed front weight included.
† Fuel usage index is ranked off the Bührer 6135 A, which has an index of 1.0. So a tractor with an index of 2.0 would use twice the fuel as the Bührer. This is not an efficiency calculation and does not take into account that some tractors are faster and therefore would finish work ahead of a tractor that uses less fuel.
